The Brown & Sharpe 599-181-901-1 Chrome Frame Outside Micrometer Set includes three vernier scale micrometers with flat anvil/spindle pairs for taking outside diameter (OD) measurements from 0" to 3". The set comes with micrometers in the following sizes: 0" to 1", 1" to 2", and 2" to 3". The vernier scale on each thimble and sleeve is graduated to 0.0001" with an accuracy of 0.004mm for precise readings. The micrometers have tungsten carbide-tipped measuring faces that resist wear and convertible friction-drive thimble mechanisms for uniform or variable pressure during adjustment. The frame, thimble, and sleeve of each micrometer have a satin chrome rust- and glare-resistant finish. The 1" to 2" and 2" to 3" micrometers have heat-insulated frames to help reduce temperature-related expansion or contraction. A spindle lock helps provide secure locking of the measurement position. The micrometers meet DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) 863 T1 NF E 11-095, and come with an inspection report with a declaration of conformity. The set comes with a 1" round reference disk, a 3" long setting rod, and a fitted wooden storage case.

Micrometers are precision measuring instruments that use a calibrated screw to measure distances. These measurements are translated into large rotations of the screw that are then able to be read from a scale or a dial. Micrometers are typically used in manufacturing, machining, and mechanical engineering. There are three types of micrometer: outside, inside, and depth. Outside micrometers may also be called micrometer calipers, and are used to measure the length, width, or outside diameter of an object. Inside micrometers are typically used to measure interior diameter, as in a hole. Depth micrometers measure the height, or depth, of any shape that has a step, groove, or slot.
Brown & Sharpe manufactures precision measuring equipment and metrology hand tools. The company, founded in 1833, is headquartered in North Kingstown, RI.
