Machine capacity is only part of the decision. Start with the largest part and operation you expect to handle, then account for workholding, tooling, inspection, access and safe material movement.

Choose by operation

Match the machine to usable work

Headline dimensions can overstate practical capacity. On a mill, compare axis travel, spindle-to-table clearance after the vise and tool are installed, table load and access around the part. On a lathe, consider usable length between centers, swing over the carriage and the workholding needed for the parts you actually make.

Rigidity, machine mass and a stable installation influence cut quality. Confirm the spindle taper or chuck system, useful speed range, motor and electrical requirements, and availability of compatible tooling. Leave enough space for handles, doors, chip control, lubrication and maintenance.

Budget for the first operation, not only the machine. Workholding, cutting tools, measuring instruments, a suitable stand and safe moving equipment may be essential to put a new machine to work.
